This week, April 18-24, was volunteer week. Volunteers serve throughout Minnesota every day. In 2003, the Central MN Foster Grandparent Program had 213 volunteers who worked 142,900 hours in 86 community agencies, and provided meaningful and supportive relationships to children. The foster grandparent program is an intergenerational volunteer program for those over 60 to serve children with special needs in schools, early education programs, residential facilities and social service agencies. Foster grandparents volunteer an average of 20 hours per week, and receive a small tax-free stipend of $2.65 per hour. They also receive transportation assistance, annual medical review, accident and liability insurance while on assignment, a daily lunch or meal allowance, education and training, paid time off, recognition, social activities and the satisfaction of knowing they make a difference. If you or someone you know would enjoy giving of time, talents and energy to volunteer through this program, please call Jean toll-free at (866) 895-7992. “We whole-heartedly thank all foster grandparents for their dedication to the children in their community. Their patience, encouragement and commitment cultivates a positive, nurturing environment for the children to learn and grow. We believe each foster grandparent makes a great difference in the lives of many children – one story, spelling test, or hug at a time.” Jackie Johnson, Program Director.
