Get your home ready for severe weather season

·

By Mark Anthony,

Chief Meteorologist

Weather column: This week is Severe Weather Awareness Week in the state of Minnesota, and we have already had some severe weather across the state. This is a week to get your home and business prepared for the long severe weather season ahead of us. Normally in Minnesota our most active time for thunderstorms and tornadoes is in May, June, and July.

On Thursday of this week there will be a state-wide tornado drill at 1:45 p.m. andÊa second optional test for counties atÊ6:55 p.m. These tests allow businesses, schools, hospitals, and other organizations and individuals an opportunity to test their preparedness for the severe weather season and to also test the equipment in local cities for the tornado sirens.

Keep in mind that heat kills more Americans on average each year, followed by flooding, tornadoes, lightning, and then hurricanes. I am an old Boy Scout and our motto was always to “be prepared!” Get your family prepared and stay safe this upcoming summer!

Have a great rest of the week!

Weather history: In 1987 a warm-front pushed across the state and brought record heat to the state. Temperatures soared into the upper 80s and lower 90s!

Weather fact: Hot weather makes the human body sweat to cool itself off. Of course, it is called evaporative cooling.
