Kimball Days were held Aug. 7-9, 2009
A possible record number of people turned out for a spectacular Kimball Days. Friday started with the Historical Society’s Supper in the park (serving about 150 people). The pedal tractor pull had 75 participants. Gracie Fox was crowned Little Miss Kimball, with her princesses Madison Hurrle and Maicy Vossen. And teens enjoyed a free dance with free pizza and pop.
There were no fireworks this year, but nature provided plenty. A severe thunderstorm started at about 4 a.m. dumping hail and more than 5 inches on the Kimball area. Tournament play continued after some delay, but everyone had fun in the park in spite of the wetness and mud. New this year were the Granite City Cloggers and a watermelon-eating contest. The Legion sold 500 pork chops (a sell-out). The evening was topped off with the street dance and a possibly record crowd. (One fireman reported serving 3 kegs of beer in about 20 minutes.)
Sunday began with the famed Lions breakfast in the park on a beautiful summer day. The car show was a hit, and the highlight of the afternoon was the Grande Day Parade (with 99 entries). SOB won the traveling trophy for best parade float. Following the parade, the Kimball Booster Club served up tacos in a bag, and an American Idol-style contest was held.
It was a great celebration of Kimball, to be sure.
