Hazel Johnson, 96

Hazel Johnson of South Haven died peacefully Saturday, Oct. 3, 2015, surrounded by family. She was 96.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, at Zion United Methodist Church in South Haven with Rev. Ruth Hograbe officiating. Burial will follow at Zion Cemetery in South Haven. Visitation will be held at Dingmann Funeral Care Chapel in Annandale from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, and one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church.

 

Hazel Eleanor Johnson was born July 14, 1919, in Annandale to Jesse and Elsie Marquardt. She graduated from Annandale High School with the Class of 1938. She married the love of her life LeRoy Johnson June 6, 1940. They built a home on Lake Augusta in South Haven where they farmed and celebrated 59 and one half years together. Hazel was best known for her role as the head cook at Annandale schools where she loved caring for the nutritional needs of the students for more than 20 years. Hazel made sure when visitors came over that no one ever went hungry, and wa
s best known for her donuts and goulash.

Hazel was preceded in death by her parents Jessie and Elsie Marquardt; her loving husband of 59 and one half years LeRoy Johnson; two brothers Emery and Stanley Marquardt; and an infant sister.

She is survived by her daughter Darlene LeBrun; son Rodney Johnson; and sister Pearl Bissonnette, all of South Haven; two sisters-in-law Ella Johnson of Annandale, and Geraldine Schut of Buffalo. She was blessed with an abundance of family with seven grandchildren: John Jr. (and Cindy) LeBrun, Jim (and Barb) LeBrun, Scott (and Darcy) LeBrun, Jay (and Lori) LeBrun, Melissa (and Scott) Olson, Heidi (and Marty) Springborg, and Nikki Johnson. Also by 15 great-grandchildren John III, Justin, Christopher, Ashley, Ryan, Madison, Jason, Laura, Austin, Brooke, Gabrielle, Mekayla, Ryan, Emma and Henry; and five great-great-grandchildren Andrew, Isabella, Harper, Lilly and Mackenzie.

The pallbearers will be John Jr., James, Scott, and Jay LeBrun, Scott Olson, Marty Springborg and Ryan Olson. Arrangements are entrusted with Dingmann Funeral Care Burial & Cremation Services of Annandale.

Memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society.
