Weather column: It was a messy commute once again for some people across Minnesota on Monday morning. Another system pushed across Minnesota Sunday night into early Monday. A winter weather advisory and a winter storm warning was issued across the state.
The heaviest snow fell across parts of northern Minnesota into northeastern Minnesota. Along the North Shore there were reports of more than a foot of snow. However, a wintry mix across central and west central also brought some slick roads.
On the backside of this system expect much colder weather to be with us. On Wednesday, temperatures across much of the state will only reach the single digits and teens for high temperatures.
Temperatures will moderate by Thursday out ahead of our next system. We could see some light snow by late Thursday into Friday.
We should rebound into the 20s and 30s by Saturday and Sunday. As I have heard from some people, if these temperatures were with us every winter it wouldn’t be too bad at all! As we have experienced so far this winter, when we have had an Arctic blast, it has been very short-lived.

Weather history: On both Jan. 9, and Jan. 10, some of the coldest wind chills ever recorded in Minnesota were experienced. Temperatures of 30 below zero and winds of 40 mph were reported in northern Minnesota. Windchill values of “100 below zero were recorded with the old formula” in parts of northern Minnesota!
Weather fact: The National Weather Service back in 2001 tweaked the “old” formula for measuring wind chill. The old index reflected a colder reading of the windchill and the new index reflects a more accurate reading of how it feels on your skin!

It will be cold for the midweek. Temperatures will struggle to make it above the double digits in many locations across the state! Look for high temperatures generally in the single digits for Wednesday. The cold weather will be short-lived, however, as we should climb back into the teens and 20s by Thursday and Friday. We could see some snow along the way late in the week.
