University of Minnesota Wheat Breeder Jim Anderson will speak at a series of upcoming “Intensive Wheat Management Seminars” in the area. Growers will have a chance to learn more about the spring wheat breeding program at the U of M and how current varieties on the market compare for disease resistance, protein, and yield. Dr. Anderson will have data about the newest release “Oklee.” Also on the program are Extension Educators Doug Holen and Dave Schwartz who will discuss management practices that will significantly increase wheat yields. Schwartz said little has changed over the past 20 years in the way we manage spring wheat compared to corn and soybean production. “We have made huge strides in corn and soybean management that is reflected in today’s yields. Really the only thing that has changed in the way we manage wheat is variety. Our fertilizer program and pesticides have pretty much remained the same,” Schwartz said. Speakers will cover everything from date of planting and planting rate to new fertilizer recommendations, herbicides, and fungicide use. “Wheat offers growers a third cash crop that is badly needed for their crop rotation. There seems to be renewed interest in growing wheat as a result of excellent wheat yields in 2003 and the added expense of controlling soybean aphids.” Seminars will be offered at the following locations: Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1:30 p.m., McLeod Extension Office, Hutchinson. Wednesday, Feb. 18, 9:30 a.m., Willmar, Health and Human Services Building, Multi-purpose Room. Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1:30 p.m., Litchfield, Meeker County Family Services Building, Library Meeting Room. A registration fee of $10 covers program costs including a copy of “The Small Grain Field Guide.” Enrollment for the seminar is limited, so growers who plan to attend must register at their local Extension Office by Feb 5.
