Retired Mankato letter carrier James Carroll died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2018, at Mayo 
Clinic Health System in Mankato. He was 92.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, at Woodland Hills Funeral Chapel with visitation from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service. Interment with military honors will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Pilgrims Rest Cemetery.
James D. Carroll was born to John and Katherine (Clark) Carroll in Jamestown, N.D. May 4, 1926. The family moved to a farm in Meeker County in 1930. Jim attended country school in that area and later high school in Kimball. The family moved to North Mankato in 1942. Jim graduated from Mankato High School in 1944. He then went into the U.S. Army serving in the liberation of the Philippines with the 40th Inf. Div. Upon discharge from the service, he returned to North Mankato and worked at various Mankato businesses. He married Lorraine Haack at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church May 28, 1949. He began work at the Mankato Post Office in 1951. After finishing his postal career, Mr. Carroll worked for Pinkerton Security Service first as a guard, and later as a superviwor. His main station was at the Cotter Company Warehouse in Mankato. Mr. Carroll, during his lifetime was active in the National Association of Letter Carriers Federal Employees. He held office at times in both organizations.
Jim’s interests were human rights, civil rights and the peace movement. He was a member of groups promoting those rights. The principle one being The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). Jim enjoyed his family, folk music, hearing and telling jokes and tending his yard.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter Linda Farm, and sister Mary.
He is survived by his wife Lorraine, daughter Kathleen (and David) Farm of Burnsville, Minn., son Patrick Carroll of Mankato; grandchildren Lisa (and Frank) Kennedy of St. Paul, and Andrew (and Liza) Farm of Shakopee; great-granddaughter Jocelyn Farm; and sister Katherine (and John) Folkema of Braham, Minn.
