Jane Engelson, 98
Jane Marie Engelson of Dassel died Friday, July 4, 2003, at the Dassel Lakeside Community Home. She was 98.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 8, at the Grace Lutheran Church in South Haven. Pastor Michael Nelson officiated at the service. Interment in the church cemetery followed the service. A family prayer service was held at the Johnson Funeral Home Monday, July 7, with Rev. Keith Carlson, pastor of the Evangelical Covenant Church officiating.
Jane Marie Hawkinson was born April 16, 1905, to John William and Anna (Anderson) Hawkinson of Holmquist S.D. She attended a rural school in the Holmquist area and later attended and graduated from Webster High School. She worked for the Federal Land Bank in St. Paul and later lived and worked in Pueblo, Colo. She was united in marriage to Helmer Engelson August 31, 1935. They lived in Morris and Canby until moving to Long Beach, Calif., during World War II. In 1947, they purchased a farm on the east side of Kingston, where she resided until 1983 when she moved to the Lincoln Apartments in Litchfield. She moved to the Dassel Lakeside Home in August 2001 because of failing health. Jane was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church and church organizations, the Johnson-Kelly American Legion Post Auxiliary of Kingston and the Kingston Garden Club. Besides her love of gardening and flowers, she enjoyed feeding and watching the birds around her home and crocheting many afghans for her family.
Jane was preceded in death by her husband Helmer in 1973, her brothers Enoch, Edwin and Ted, and sisters Ruth Bailly and Helen Lowry.
She is survived by her sons Jack (and Arlyss) Engelson of Dassel and Doug (and Margaret) Engelson of Litchfield; 4 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and 10 step-great-grandchildren; her sisters Gertrude Twedell of Long Beach, Calif., and Kathy Johnson of Kirkland, Wash.
Music for the service was provided by soloist Sheldon Hedin and Barbara Root on the organ. Casket bearers were Matthew, Erik and Thomas Engelson, Jesse Warner, Paul Barden, John Juusola and Marlowe Anderson. Arrangements were by Johnson Funeral Home in Dassel.
