John “Jack” Ampe, Sr., of Kimball died Oct. 9, 2003, at Hilltop Care Center in Watkins where he had lived the past two years. He was 94.
Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Kimball with Rev. David Grundman officiating. Burial followed in the parish cemetery. Friends called from 5-8 p.m. Monday and 9-10 a.m. Tuesday at the Dingmann Funeral Care Chapel in Kimball. A prayer service was held at 7:30 Monday evening.
John J. Ampe, Sr., was born April 9, 1909, to Celeste and Cornelia (Moorse) Ampe in Ghent, Minn. He married Rose M. Schlagel Nov. 25, 1937; she preceded him in death Oct. 28, 1988. Jack farmed and sold DeKalb Seed Corn. He was a member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Kimball and former member of the Knights of Columbus. He was an avid bowler and dancer, and he enjoyed sports.
Jack was preceded in death by his wife Rose and six brothers: Peter, Mathew, Cyril, Celeste Jr., Joseph and Henry Ampe.
He is survived by his best and dearest friend Lucetta Walters of Watkins; his children: Shirley (and Wes) Olson of Shoreview; Janice Kramer of Scappoose, Ore.; Marlene (and Pierre) Doley of Palos Verdes, Calif.; John Jr. (and Carole) Ampe of Dayton; Mike (and Lynna) Ampe of Newport Coast, Calif.; Jim (and Karole) Ampe of Scappoose, Ore.; Cindy (and Ralph) Pauly of Warren, Ore.; Bob (and Denise) Ampe of Lake Forest, Calif.; brother Charles (and Peg) Ampe of Paynesville; 22 grandchildren: Dean, Lori, Connie, David, Kevin, Ken, Julie, Tim, Tina, Denise, John, Missy, Donalyn, Dina, Jeremy, Sarah, Laura, Kendra, Nathan, Nicholas, Lisa and Christian; and 29 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were John Jr., Mike, Jim, Bob and John Ampe III, Pierre Doley, and Dean, David and Wes Olson. Music was provided by organist Frosty Schiefelbein and the St. Anne’s Choir.
