Joseph Lies of Chippewa Falls, Wis., formerly of South Haven, died Dec. 21, 2003, after a battle with cancer. He was 81. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 31, in Chippewa Falls. Joseph M. Lies was born Sept. 13, 1922, in Watkins to Joseph G. and Dorothy (Krueger) Lies. At age 2, Joe and his parents moved to South Haven. He attended grade school in South Haven and graduated from Annandale High School in 1940. After graduation he joined the Army and served as a dental assistant during World War II. After the war, Joe entered the meat business, working with his father and brother Gerry in J.G. Lies Meats and Groceries. Joe left South Haven and became a salesman for Cudahy Packing. In 1948 he married Marge Cook, whom he later divorced. They lived in Hopkins after Joe accepted a position with SuperValu. Joe moved to the Brainerd area where he met Judy Johnson; they were married in 1972. Together they moved to Chippewa Falls where he owned and operated SuperValu stores in Chippewa Falls and Rice Lake, Wis., until his retirement. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, and sister Harriet Lies. He is survived by his brothers Gerald (and Edith) Lies of South Haven and Donald (and Jeanne) Lies of New Hope; children Gerry Sparrow, Jim (and Pamela) Lies, Debbie (and Lee) Seamans, Teri (and Alan) Haas, and Ryan (and Michelle) Lies; and seven grandchildren.
