The way the season started out, it seemed like it may be a long season; we weren’t able to go outside and practice, our games were postponed and we had a lot of inexperienced players. The JV roster was all freshmen so there was a lot of learning and adjusting to be done. The girls had to prepare for a different style of play and competition, going from playing junior high to playing JV is a big jump. The JV girls concluded their season with a five-game winning streak, a record of 10-9 and a third-place finish at the Paynesville Tournament. During the season they swept Eden Valley-Watkins and Pierz, and they split with Maple Lake, Howard Lake-Waverly, Belgrade Brooten-Elrosa, and Holdingford. Defensively, the team was led by three pitchers: Whitney Gettler, Jami Weigelt, and Amanda Schiefelbein. Weigelt and Schiefelbein had a majority of the starts, with Gettler coming in as the closer. When not pitching, the three rotated between third base and shortstop. The pitchers were backed by their defense with Mandy Libbesmeier as catcher, Kari Mackereth at first base, Emily Linn at second base and rotating in the outfield was Kim Capes (also put in a few innings at pitcher and third base), Kayla Hinkemeyer (also some time at second), Nicole Konz (also put in a few innings at second), Vanessa Gillman, Rayell Berscheid (also a few innings at third and first) and Jennifer Brutger (a few games as catcher). Offensively, Gettler led the team in homeruns with one; she hit a three-run HR against Royalton. She also tied with Schiefelbein, Libbesmeier, and Weigelt with one triple each. Berscheid led the team in doubles with three. Behind her were Capes, Linn and Weigelt with two each and with one each were Konz and Gettler. The girls had great attitudes and were willing to try any position. Thanks for a great season and being so flexible about learning new positions.
