On Monday, Jan. 23, Milaca dominated the Cubs, 92-44, at Kimball Area High School. Tuesday’s action saw Kimball fall to Royalton, 67-55. Thursday was the final game of the week, and the Cubs were defeated by Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa, 84-52.
Milaca game
Kimball stats: Halftime score was 47-24, Milaca. Josh Witte, 4 points; Peyton Hooper, 8 points; Owen Mortenson, 11 points; Ronnie Arnold, 5 points; Jed Spaulding, 10 points, 10 rebounds; Evan Powell, 6 points.
“Milaca was one of the best teams I have seen in a number of years. They do everything very well. They have size, speed, strength, shooting, and lots of athleticism. Milaca has a very good chance to make the state tournament if they stay healthy. We were simply overmatched in this game. Our kids played hard, but Milaca dominated us in every facet of the game,” said Coach Jay Klein.
Royalton game
Kimball stats: Halftime score was 26-22, Royalton. Josh Witte, 4 points; Peyton Hooper, 10 points; Owen Mortenson, 11 points, 3 rebounds; Schindler, 22 points, 9 rebounds; Jed Spaulding, 6 points, 13 rebounds; Evan Powell, 2 points.
“It was a very physical game. We really struggled rebounding, as Royalton did not shoot well from the outside. Their defense was very good and did not allow us many open shots. In the second half, they built a 15-point lead. We made a run to cut it to eight, but could get no closer as we ran out of time,” Coach Klein explained.
BBE game
Kimball stats: Halftime score was 66-29, BBE. Peyton Hooper, 7 points, 1 rebound, 2 assists; Owen Mortenson, 14 points, 2 rebounds, 1 steal; Austin Schindler, 12 points, 5 rebounds; Devin Gruba, 2 points; Andray Stang, 2 points; Jed Spaulding, 13 points, 10 rebounds; Evan Powell, 2 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists; Carson Otto, 2 rebounds; Brandon Henkemeyer, 1 rebound; Christopher Erickson, 1 rebound; Ronnie Arnold, 1 rebound.
“BBE jumped out to an 11-1 lead to start. We started to make some plays and, at the nine-minute mark, we were trailing 27-21. After BBE called a timeout, they went on a 39-8 run to end the half. We switched defenses and called time-
outs, but nothing we did could stop their run. They pulled their starters early in the second half, so the final score was much closer,” Coach Klein said.
