“We worked really hard and competed well at times. Their physicality really wore on us throughout the game. EV-W is very good this year, and they have a great chance to get back to state. I was happy with our improvement, and Jed Spaulding had a great game for us tonight,” said Coach Jay Klein.
Paynesville game
Cubs’ stats: Carson Otto, 5 points; Bryant Knaus, 23 points, 5 rebounds; Owen Mortenson, 17 points; Brandon Henkemeyer, 6 points; Andray Stang, 6 points; Jed Spaulding, 7 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists. (Paynesville led 33-31 at half-time).
“The first half was close the entire time. Our players really played well as we hung with a very good Paynesville team. We trailed by two at the break, 33-31. It was much of the same in the second half, as we were able to match Paynesville from the three-point line. After a couple of defensive miscues and a few turnovers on offense, Paynesville was able to build a lead. We played hard until the end and came up a little short. Overall, I was very pleased with our improvement. For the first time this year, we played two good halves of basketball. If we had made a couple of more shots and had a few less mistakes, the outcome may have been different,” Coach Klein explained.
