This year’s Valley Daze Grand Marshal is a familiar face to many. Bruce Kiehn has been the Eden Valley-Watkins Secondary Principal since 2002 (and EV-W Elementary teacher for several years before that). Except for four years as an elementary principal at ACGC (from 1998-2002), Kiehn spent his entire education career at EV-W. He has been very hands-on, making the effort to know each and every student to pass through the high school doors. He has been present at sporting events, concerts, and more. That’s a good many student and family and community interactions over 34 years, so he may well be the best-known and most-recognized Valley Daze Grand Marshal in some time.
Kiehn has retired from his role as principal which will end in a matter of days, July 31. Long-time EV-W Activities Director and Dean of Students Dave Schneider will be the new EV-W Secondary Principal as of August 1.
“My most proud moments are working with students, and seeing them being successful in their personal and life goals,” says Kiehn. “I received much joy when students didn’t believe in themselves and, through working together, were able to help them exceed their expectations.”
Kiehn has appreciated the -family-type atmosphere at EV-W, where “everyone cares for and supports one another.” There have been many words of adulation, congratulations, and respect for Kiehn by the school superintendent and school board. He has been an integral part of the success of EV-W students and the district.
Kiehn has been an educator and/or administrator since 1985, a total of 38 years in education.
Bruce and his wife Joyce have two children and three grandchildren. They plan to travel more in retirement, with trips planned for Door County, a winter trip to Arizona, and some bike trips. He also plans to pick up his golf game, and do more volunteer work with church and community organizations.
“I was both overwhelmed and honored to serve [as Grand Marshal this year],” says Kiehn. “Eden Valley is an outstanding and welcoming community made up of wonderful people. I have been blessed to spend the majority of my career here, and could not have asked for a better experience.”
As Grand Marshal, Kiehn will lead the Valley Daze parade starting at 6 p.m. Saturday, June 24. He’ll be riding in a Chevrolet SSR driven by his son John. He looks forward to reconnecting with past graduates, and visiting with community members during Valley Daze, as he has every year.
