The Cubs took down Royalton, 53-45, last Tuesday, Dec. 4. On Thursday, the Kimball boys ran away from Upsala, with a 69-43 victory. The winning trend continued on Friday, when the Cubs outlasted Dassel-Cokato, 41-32. (Royalton Game) The Cubs started out slow and struggled shooting the ball or even getting open shots. Royalton’s defense played well and surrendered very few open looks at the basket. Kimball’s defense was especially sharp in the first half, and in the second half the guys managed to get more open shots because of their halftime adjustments. “The shots started falling (five three pointers in the second half) and our confidence rose. It was a good test for us in the opener,” said Coach Jay Klein. Stats: Drew Gustafson, 22 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals; Chase Gustafson, 15 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists; Noah Jurek, 13 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists; Casey Gohmann, 2 points; Brian Binsfeld, 1 point, 3 rebounds.

(Upsala Game) Kimball played good defense throughout, limiting Upsala to just one shot most of the time. In the second half, the Cardinals hit a few buckets and cut the lead to 15 at one point. “Noah Jurek and Brian Binsfeld did a nice job on the inside for us, and the Gustafson brothers were able to score on the perimeter and open up the paint. Drew had a nice game, registering a triple double,” Coach Klein said. Stats: Drew Gustafson, 21 points, 10 assists, 12 rebounds; Noah Jurek, 26 points, 9 rebounds; Chase Gustafson, 8 points, 3 assists; Riley Miller, 4 points, 3 rebounds; Brian Binsfeld, 10 points, 3 rebounds.

(Dassel-Cokato Game) “We had very tired legs tonight, playing three games in four days. I was very happy with the defensive effort. Riley Miller did a great job tonight. Drew Gustafson and Noah Jurek carried us on offense. Dassel-Cokato was short-handed and they played their hearts out. They deserve a lot of credit. Their defense gave us fits,” explained Coach Klein. Stats: Drew Gustafson, 21 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals; Noah Jurek, 10 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists; Brian Binsfeld, 4 points, 2 rebounds; Hunter Hickman, 2 points; Riley Miller, 2 points, 4 rebounds; Casey Gohmann, 2 points.
