The Cubs had a full itinerary last week, playing Maple Lake Tuesday, Jan. 31, battling EV-W Friday, Feb. 3, then closing out the week vs. Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity Saturday, Feb. 4.
Kimball 62, Maple Lake 43
Kimball jumped out to a 21-11 lead and increased it to a 36-25 bulge at the break. ?ÄúI was happy with our defensive effort, especially in the second half. We shot the ball well from the perimeter (7 of 13 from 3-pt. range, 17 of 26 deuces), but struggled from the FT line (7 of 15) missing the front end of two one and ones. Also, we really need to cut down on sloppy turnovers as we had 14 in the game,?Äù said coach Jay Klein.
Cubs?Äô scoring: Darius Westrich 18, Del Guerrero 15, Hayden Gagnon 10, Drew Gustafson 10, Noah Jurek 2, Levi Sodergren 4, Weston Hine 2, and Michael Hoffman 1.
EV-W 51, Kimball 43
?ÄúWe played very well in the first half, maybe our best half of basketball this year. We led 33-23 at the break. The second half we played ?Äònot to lose?Äô instead of trying to win. We were very tentative and did not match their intensity. It was a really disappointing loss after playing a great first half,?Äù said Klein.
Cubs?Äô scoring: Darius Westrich 6, Del Guerrero 15, Hayden Gagnon 6, Drew Gustafson 12, Weston Hine 2, and Michael Hoffman 2.
Kimball 72, Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity 61
The Cubs led 42-28 at the half, but LPHT closed to within four points. Kimball was sharp from the charity stripe, especially Hayden Gagnon, who did a nice job of getting to the line. Weston Hine did a great job defensively against a very good post player in Rees Schuette. ?ÄúI was really happy with the way we answered when the Bulldogs cut the lead to four. We made some big shots from the field and some key free-throws,?Äù Coach Klein said.
Leaders: Guerrero 24 points; Gagnon 22 points; Westrich 10 points, 7 assists; and Gustafson 10 points, 6 assists.
