Police Chief Todd Rohloff accepted an award on behalf of the Kimball Police Department at city council, for the agency’s hard work in the Safe and Sober Campaign. Monday, Aug. 18, retired law enforcement agent from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, Tom Kummrow, presented Rohloff with the latest in speed detection technology, the Stalker mobile traffic radar unit “Not everyone gets them [radar units], it’s very competitive,” Kummrow said at the city council meeting. “This is something to be very proud of in the police department.” About 200 departments statewide participated in the Safe and Sober Campaign. Kimball was one of two selected from the pool of competitors for the honor. “All of the departments are analyzed, not just based on the campaign, but on other things,” Rohloff said. “Their sizes, their number of officers, traffic laws; everyday influences.” The new radar system, valued between $3,500-4,000 is located on the dashboard of the police car. Its duel-antenna feature allows officers to check the speeds of vehicles traveling behind the squad and in front of it. “This is the best radar mobile made today,” Rohloff said. “Some state troopers don’t even have it.” According to Kummrow, there are obvious reasons why Kimball received the radar and this distinction. “You never run into them (Kimball police) looking bad, they are working hard, 24/7,” Kummrow said. For Rohloff, the recognition from the state agency is as sweet as the radar. “Its nice to see that the Department of Public Safety knows what we are doing; sees what we are doing,” Rohloff said. “We meet the goal they set for traffic safety and we get thanks for it. The public doesn’t really understand what we do, but the agencies know what its all about, so it’s nice to get a thanks when you are successful.” This is the fourth year the Kimball Police Department has been recognized for its performance in the Safe and Sober Campaign.
