REGULAR MEETING
Board of Education, April 19, 2023

Chair K. Helgeson opened the meeting at 6 p.m. with members E. Helgeson, Gallagher, Mahlum, Lindberg, and Libbesmeier in attendance. The Pledge of Allegiance was said by all.
Motion by E. Helgeson, seconded by Mahlum, to approve the agenda as presented. Motion carried, 6-0.
Motion by Gallagher, seconded by Lindberg, to approve the Consent Agenda. Motion carried, 6-0. The Consent Agenda included:
- Approve minutes from the March 15, 2023, Regular meeting.
- Approval of Bills.
- Treasurer’s and Quarterly Reports.
- Approve increasing Nathan Snyder, High School Custodian, to full-time, Category III, Step 6 of the Non-Licensed Agreement, effective March 20, 2023.
- Acknowledge resignation received from Elizabeth Luby, High School Science, effective March 16, 2023.
- Accept resignation received from Christianne Sbrega, Elementary Paraprofessional, effective March 20, 2023.
- Accept resignation received from Vicki Woods, papaprofessional, effective May 25, 2023.
- Approve hiring Katlin Albers, Elementary Paraprofessional, at Category III, Step 4 of the ESP Agreement, starting March 20, 2023.
- Approve hiring Janice Kollar, High School Paraprofessional, at Category III, Step 4 of the ESP Agreement; four (4) days per week, 6 hours per day, for the remainder of the school year, beginning March 27, 2023.
- Approve hiring Joshua Olson, High School Science, at MA, Step 8 of the Master Agreement, for the 2023-2024 school year.
- Approve hiring Amanda Olson, High School Science, at MA, Step 12 of the Master Agreement, for the 2023-2024 school year.
- Approve six extended contract days for Jay Klein, Guidance Counselor.
- Approve 10 extended contract days for Ashley Eisenbraun, FFA Co-Advisor.
- Approve 10 extended contract days for Michaela Gallup, FFA Co-Advisor and Youth. Apprenticeship Advisor.
Mrs. Bonnifield reported the following:
- Request to amend 2023-24 calendar to remove two nights of 6th-grade conferences.
*Limits 6th-grade teachers from being alone in the building.
*Treats 6th-grade like 7-12.
*Allows parents to attend on one night grades 6-12.
*Avoids conference with only the homeroom teacher.
- Spanish trip in summer 2024; okay to proceed with planning?
*Dates: End of June 2024, or mid-July 2024.
*Cost: $3,400-$3,900.
*Possible Locations: www.eftours.com/educational-tours/destinations/latin-america?countries=c%2Bcosta-rica. Most likely the one called Adventure in Costa Rica. Number of people interested: 8-12 as of right now. Could be more.
*Fundraising: Concessions for track, volleyball, and football. Meat raffles.
- Compete with PSEO Classes:
- Add in a College Experience Day where college students visit M-State, sit in a class, tour.
- Add in office hours, 2x/mo, students check in, and then can work outside the classroom.
- Ms. Ochs will present to the current 11th-graders about the benefits of College in the Schools vs. online PSEO
- Current High School Enrollment numbers.
Mr. Timmerman reported the following:
- This week is National Volunteer Appreciation week. We would like to thank the various volunteers that come to KES to help support our students;
- Foster Grandparent program.
- Jr. Achievement program.
- Field trip chaperones.
- Teacher Appreciation Week, May 8-12. PIE will recognize all staff.
- Administrative Assistants Day is April 26.
- Severe Weather Week this week. Tornado drill on Thursday at 1:45 p.m.
- Kindergarten numbers so far for next year are at 54 for sure, and waiting on four more.
- Elementary Book Fair will be May 1 through 5, BOGO free.
- Elementary Music Program – a Musical, May 1, 9:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. at the elem. school.
- Currently no funds for summer camps. We will have ESY and Targeted Services.
- Ag Day May 5.
- 5th-grade graduation May 23, at 1:30 p.m.
- Last day of school will have picnic, and the afternoon 5th-graders vs teachers in kickball.
Mr. Widvey reported the following:
- Construction Update.
- Backstop Update.
- Abatement Bonds for parking lots.
- Negotiations.
Motion by Libbesmeier, seconded by Mahlum, to accept transfer of remaining transportation contract from Hendricks Bus Service to 4 Point O School Services. Motion carried, 6-0.
Motion by Gallagher, seconded by Libbesmeier, to Adopt Resolution Relating to the Termination and Nonrenewal of a Probationary Teacher. Motion carried via roll-call vote, 6-0.
Motion by Mahlum, seconded by E. Helgeson, to approve increase from .5 FTE to .604 FTE for Megan Taylor, Elementary Phy-Ed teacher. Motion carried, 6-0.
Motion by Gallagher, seconded by E. Helgeson, to move to closed session regarding potential real estate availability. Motion carried 6-0. Time: 7:24 p.m.
Motion by Lindberg, seconded by Mahlum, to open closed session. Motion carried, 6-0. Time: 7:31 p.m.
Motion by Gallagher, seconded by E. Helgeson, to close closed session. Motion carried, 6-0. Time: 7:59 p.m.
Motion by Lindberg, seconded by Libbesmeier, to reopen meeting. Motion carried, 6-0. Time: 7:59 p.m.
