Kimball softball team in section finals

The #2-seed Lady Cubs advanced to the finals of the Sub-Section 5AA West Division tournament, following a 6-0 victory over #1-seed Maranatha Christian Academy in the semis last Tuesday, May 23 (at Brooklyn Park  Zane Sports Complex). Junior Katie Merchant and freshman Emily Utecht teamed up to capture the five-hit shutout vs. the top-ranked Mustangs. Merchant surrendered four hits and fanned 11. She issued no walks, hit one batter, and picked up the win. Utecht struck out two in her work on the mound. Sophomore Rachel Utecht was 3 for 4 with an RBI and junior Kenzie Leither was 2 for 4 with a stolen base and an RBI.

At press time, the final championship game vs. #4-seed Mayer Lutheran will have already been played (May 31), so SEE YOU AT STATE, GIRLS! Kimball would have had to lose twice to Mayer, at the University of Northwestern, St. Paul, not to qualify for the state tournament.

Kimball Cubs fast pitch (softball) vs West Lutheran, Emily Utecht is called on to get the last three out in the playoff win over West Lutheran. Staff phot by Marguerite Laabs.
