Cubs Fall to Pioneers in Four Sets
The Kimball Cubs made another trip up Highway 10 this week. In the first game of conference play, the Cubs faced the Pioneers of Pierz. Pierz has been a top conference contender in volleyball for many years. The 2009 season is no exception.
The Cubs opened the match with a quick start and an early lead. Unfortunately, the Pioneers came back. Set 1 went back and forth between the teams. Eventually the Pioneers took the win with 26-24 score. In the second set, the Cubs struggled in serving; Pierz won, 25-20. The third set went back and forth between the two teams again. This time, the Cubs prevailed, winning 25-23. The fourth set also proved close, but mental errors cost the Cubs a win. Pierz took the match with a score of 25-22.
Offensively, the Cubs were led by junior Shannon Donnay, who had 12 kills. Tesslyn Callander added 8 kills and Rachel Lahr recorded 7 kills. Molly Hurrle had 30 set assists. Defensively, Tesslyn Callander provided 17 digs and Kelsi Woods contributed 10.
The Cubs are 2-1 overall with an 0-1 start in the conference. They play Saturday, Sept. 12, at the Bison Invitational Tournament in Buffalo.
