The Cubs played in the Sauk Rapids Invitational tournament on Saturday, Sept. 8, and they saw plenty of competition. Tournament entrants included Annandale, Braham, Brainerd, Foley, Holdingford, Kimball, Little Falls, Monticello, Osakis, Pipestone, Royalton, Sauk Centre, St. Cloud Cathedral, Wadena-Deer Creek, and Watertown-Mayer.

“I can tell you we had a challenging day. We started off against Watertown-Mayer and they won 2-0, with set scores of 11-25 and 14-25. We just had too many net violations and unforced hitting and serving errors,” said Coach Tabitha Mortenson.

Kimball’s second match was against a very tough Wadena-Deer Creek team. The Cubs struggled on defense and were unable to find a sustained attacking rhythm. Kimball lost by set scores of 11-25 and 15-25.

Osakis handed the Cubs their third loss of the day, 2-0. Set scores were 17-25 and 16-25. The girls managed to salvage some of the day’s efforts with a 2-0 victory over Braham. Kimball won the first set, 25-20 and the second one, 25-23; behind several, consecutive service points by Hailey Bue.

“We are showing improvement, but we need to have confidence in being able to play better,” Coach Mortenson said. Sauk Centre defeated Watertown-Mayer 2-1, 25-23, 19-25, and 15-8, to win the championship game.
