Kimball woman celebrates 50 years of religious life

·

The Sisters of the Order of St. Benedict are pleased to announce that Dorothy Manuel, OSB, is celebrating her 50th anniversary of religious life. The monastic community will celebrate the jubilarians at a 10:30 a.m. Eucharist on the Solemnity of Benedict, Wednesday, July 11. The public is invited to attend a reception from 2-4 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Chapel, St. Benedict’s Monastery in St. Joseph. Sister Dorothy was born in Kimball, the second of five children born to Caroline and Louis Manuel. The family later moved to Richmond, where Dorothy attended grade school, followed by St. Boniface High School in Cold Spring, all under sister-teachers from St. Benedict’s Monastery. After high school she entered monastic life. Sister Dorothy says, “My religious community provided many opportunities for my spiritual, educational and psychological growth. I earned a B.S. from the College of Saint Benedict and a master’s degree in school administration from the University of Dayton. As a young Sister I taught in Nassau, Bahamas, for four years – a very special experience. Gifts I did not know I had were called forth by community leadership when I was asked to take on leadership roles as an elementary school principal, diocesan school consultant and personnel director for the monastic community. Presently, I serve as the Director of the Spirituality Center here at the monastery, a ministry that I feel privileged to do at this time in my life’s journey.” She continues, “I have had wonderful opportunities for enrichment through travel and professional workshops and conferences. I have been blessed with good health and continue to enjoy winter sports, walking, biking and swimming. I enjoy various kinds of games and cards, but my very favorite is bridge.” For more information, call (320) 363-7100 or visit www.sbm.osb.org.
