Kimball wrestlers start season with fifth-place win

·

The Kimball Cubs went into the ACGC Classic with four open weights because the wrestlers were ineligible academically, but the Cubs still managed to stay 20 points from second place. Five of the seven teams at the tournament were from Section 5A. They were all very close, so it should be a very close race to see which team will go to state competition at the end of the year. The Cubs had two wrestlers make it to the finals, captains Gary Salmela (130) and Jeremy Dahnke (152). Both lost very close matches, with Gary losing in the final eight seconds and Jeremy losing in overtime. Picking up pins for the Cubs were Gary Salmela (130), and two for Erich Deutsch (135), Chris Barthel (140), Dan Barthel (145), Jeremy Dahnke (152), Ryan Nutter (189) and Peter Jonas (hwt). Place-winners were Gary Salmela second, Erich Deutsch third, Chris Barthel fourth, Dan Barthel third, Jeremy Dahnke second, John Hanley third, Ryan Nutter fourth, and Peter Jonas third. Team standings were Willmar 163, EV-W 119.5, ACGC 118.5, KMS 117.5, Kimball 99.5, NYA 90.5, HL-W 62. In the JV tournament, all JV wrestlers won at least one match. The team consisted of Jamie Kranz, Jeremy Vinar, David Dahnke, Josh Keike, Zach Mackereth and Michal Wills. Thursday, Dec. 11, the Cubs will go to BBE for their first conference match. Kimball should be at full strength, with everyone in the line-up. Starting time is 6:30 p.m.    Saturday, Dec. 13, the Cubs go to Milaca for the Milaca Duals; starting time is 10 a.m. The Cubs’ first home meet will be Tuesday, Dec. 16, against another conference team, Howard Lake-Waverly. Come out and support the Cub wrestlers!
