Members of the Kingston Johnson Kelly American Legion Post 483 and Auxiliary met for their regular monthly meeting Tuesday, March 27. March is American Legion Birthday Month, so the members enjoyed a potluck dinner before the meetings. The auxiliary members in a group sang “Happy Birthday” greetings to the legioneers. The auxiliary meeting was called to order by president Barbara Root; opening prayer was by Ann Hamilton, after which the “Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag” was recited, the national anthem “The Star Spangled Banner” was sung and Preamble to the Constitute of the American Legion Auxiliary repeated. The business meeting proceeded, with the minutes of the past meeting read by secretary Judy Compton, and treasurer’s report read by Mary Jane Arens. Communications, all program forms given to the chairman and all reports returned before April 15. The axuiliary Girl Stater will be Emily Jarl of Dassel High School. She is the daughter of Dave and Susan Jarl of Dassel. April is Children and Youth Month. Hundreds of children experienced special happiness because of the thousands of dollars donated by auxiliaries to various programs. The children collected labels, top tabs, etc. Books were donated to school libraries. Children learned about what the poppy symbolizes, safety, the flag and freedom. “Let Freedom Ring” rang loud and clear through the state of Minnesota this past year. Many American legion auxiliary youth members sent care packages of candy and baked goods to the troops and military personnel who are on active duty in foreign lands. Boy Stater for Johnson Kelly American Legion Post 483 is Sean Scheeler of Kimball. He is the son of Lloyd and Deanne Scheeler. Officers of the Kingston Legion unit are: Commander Gary Mansicka, secretary Paul Karenen, treasurer Darrel Hedlund and chaplain Luke Lekander.
