Lady Cubs earn wire-to-wire win
·
The Lady Cubs jumped out to the first lead, scoring the first two baskets of the game versus the Paynesville Bulldogs via two Hope Kuechle dribble drives to the hoop. Later in the half, Isabelle Schmitz sunk a pair of three-pointers to give the Cubs a 17-10 edge. Kuechle followed with another Cubs’ three-pointer, pushing the edge to 20-10.
Behind this strong start, the Cubs never looked back in a wire-to-wire 63-45 conference road victory in Paynesville on Jan. 3.
“I thought we played a solid game from the start tonight with good communication on defense,” Cubs head coach Jeremy Kuechle said via email, “and we ran the floor well while working unselfishly on offense finding the open player for quality shot attempts.”
The Cubs received contributions from numerous players. With four minutes left in the first half, Mazie Jurek scored eight of the Cubs’ next 10 points to help build the team’s lead to 28-12. Lily VonWahlde would catch fire from deep, ending the first half by hitting three three-pointers, helping the Cubs take a 42-19 lead into halftime.
According to Coach Kuechle, “great team play” allowed the Cubs to maintain a 20-plus point lead in the second half. VonWahlde’s fourth three-pointer with seven minutes left pushed the Cubs lead to 58-33.
Offensively, Mazie Jurek led the Cubs with a double-double performance of 23 points and 11 rebounds. Kuechle nearly recorded a double-double with nine points and 13 assists, tying the Cubs’ single-game assist record, and led the team in steals with five. Behind her four of eight performance from three-point range, VonWahlde finished with 12 points, and Lexi Schindele grabbed nine rebounds to also pace the Cubs.
With the win, the Cubs improved to 6-3 overall and 2-1 in the Central Minnesota Conference. The team currently sits in fourth in the conference standings.
