Tuesday, Jan. 5, Kimball visited Milaca in a section contest which would provide a bit more excitement than the Cubs were hoping for.
Kimball would not shoot very well from the floor on the night, as they tallied 18 for 59 shooting, and struggled to put their opponent away when they had the opportunity. Kimball’s defense would keep the Wolves offense in check just enough as Kimball held on for a 45-41 victory.
The defense was led by junior Natalie Stein with six steals, followed closely by senior Tesslynn Callander robbing five steals of her own.
Junior Megan Garding and sophomore Mandy Wittenberg would lead the rebounding effort with 10 and nine boards respectively. The scoring line finished as follows: Garding 9, Stein 8, Callander 7, Vigoren 6, Merten 5, Kastanek 4, Wittenberg 4, Messer 2.
Next up for the Cubs was an important conference game against Maple Lake Thursday, Jan. 8. Kimball jumped all over the Irish early with a 12-4 run to start the game and eventually extended their lead to as much as 21 points, as the Cubs handled their opponent by executing very well on the court. Wittenberg would lead the balanced offense with 14 points, along with eight rebounds. Natalie Stein shot well from the floor, scoring 12 points, Garding with 9 points, Vigoren 8, Merten 6, Messer 4, Callander 4, and Myers 2. Tesslynn Callander distributed a season-high seven assists and also collected three steals. Vigoren also had three steals in the game that ended with a 59-45 win for the Cubs. Friday, Jan. 8, the Lady Cubs looked to keep things rolling against Swanville at home, and they did just that by building a 33-17 halftime advantage, leading to a 62-29 final score. Kimball had four players scoring double figures in their balanced attack led by Wittenberg with 12 points, followed by Garding with 10 points. Callander and Stein each had 10 points, while Vigoren had 7, Messer 6, Dingmann 4, and Kastanek 2. Garding notched a double-double, grabbing 12 rebounds as well to lead the team in that category while Callander led in assists with four, while she and Messer both had four steals to lead the defense. Wittenberg had three steals, while Stein, Vigoren, Donnay, and Myers all had 2 steals each, as Kimball had 23 total steals on the night. The victory pushes the Cubs winning streak to 5 games and their overall record to 8-2 (2-1 conference).
Next, the Cubs are at Howard Lake Tuesday, Jan. 12, and back home Friday, Jan. 15, against Rockford. Go Big Blue!
