Lady Cubs win two more games

With their first loss still burning in their hearts, the Lady Cubs looked to rebound against two teams that had been struggling most of the year. Ogilvie, a new team to Kimball’s schedule, and Holdingford, a very young conference opponent, both looking to possibly take advantage of the Lady Cubs still frustrated with their last game’s outcome. Ogilvie On Tuesday, Jan. 28, Ogilvie was the opponent at Wirth Gym. The Tigers came into the game needing a victory; they had played well in their last few games, but couldn’t get over the hump and pull out a victory. Talking to their coach before the game, he said he was hoping to maybe catch the Lady Cubs on a night they might not be playing well. The way the game started, it looked like he might have gotten his wish as Kimball came out very flat. Defensively, we were standing around, shots on offense were limited as the Tigers decided to see if they could frustrate the Lady Cubs by being very patient. The first quarter came to an end with the Lady Cubs only leading 10-7. However, the second quarter was a complete turnaround. The Lady Cubs refocused and played up to their ability. Tammy Kuechle personally scored 16 points in the second quarter and Melanie Marquardt was 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. The Lady Cubs cruised to 28-6 in the second quarter and led 38-13 at half-time. The second half reflected the second quarter as Kimball was able to continue to pressure the Tigers into turnovers and allow very few shot attempts. When the final buzzer rang, the Lady Cubs had their eleventh victory with a score of 70-28. As a team, Kimball played very well, shooting 26/51 (51 percent) from the field and 13/16 (82 percent) from the free-throw line. The Lady Cubs had 36 rebounds, 18 steals, 17 assists and an amazing seven turnovers for the game. Individually, the Cubs were led by Kuechle 27 points, 13 rebounds, five steals, three assists; Jenny Kunkel 15 points, three assists; Melanie Marquardt 11 points, seven assists, six steals; Amelia Hentges seven points; Carla Henneman two points, nine rebounds, two steals; Jenna Stenger four points; and Tabitha Maus 3 points. Holdingford In game number two of the week, the Lady Cubs travelled to Holdingford to compete against the Huskers in CMC conference play. Holdingford was just coming off two surprising victories and were looking to make Kimball number three. Not wanting to have a repeat of Tuesday’s first quarter, the Lady Cubs came out with energy and confidence and easily built a lead of 24-6 after the first quarter, thanks to eight points from Kuechle, six points from Kunkel and four points each from Marquardt and Montonye. Kunkel continued to have the hot hand in the second quarter, netting eight more points. Marquardt contributed seven points and the Lady Cubs led comfortably at half-time, 44-10. In the third quarter the Lady Cubs seemed to lose their focus and concentration. The unforced turnovers started to mount up, allowing Holdingford to take advantage and score some easy baskets. Kimball was still able to find their scoring punch with Kuechle scoring 11 more points, Marquardt adding seven and Hentges chipping in with four points of her own. Kimball led 66-24 after three quarters and cruised the rest of the way, allowing a lot of playing time for the rest of the girls. When the fourth quarter ended, the Lady Cubs had achieved their twelfth overall and eighth conference wins. As a team Kimball shot an amazing 57.6 percent (34/59) from the field, but only 50 percent (2/4) from the free-throw line, with 38 rebounds, 29 steals and 27 assists. Individually, Kimball was led by Tammy Kuechle who recorded a triple-double by having 26 points, 14 rebounds and 10 steals. This is the second time in Kuechle’s career that she has recorded a triple-double, and only the third triple-double I have coached in the last few years. Melanie Marquardt, who has the other triple-double, set the school record for assists in a game with 13, breaking Karen Hendrickson’s mark of 11. Marquardt also contributed 18 points, five rebounds and eight steals. Kunkel had her second straight game of 15 points to go along with her four steals and five assists. Hentges took six points, and three rebounds; Montonye had four points and three rebounds; Henneman had two points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals; Ashley Kunkel had two points. I was very happy with the girls’ playing this week. The two teams we played were two teams we should beat, and the girls did not disappoint. The Lady Cubs now sit at 12-1 and are still tied 8-1 for first place in the CMC with Rockford. I was also very pleased with our defense last week. We have been working on our man-man defense and it is starting to come along. The girls are starting to see the little aspects that make for great team defense. Up next Up next for the Lady Cubs are three games. Kimball starts off the week with conference opponent Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted at Wirth Gym on Tuesday, Feb. 4. Then on Thursday, Feb. 6, St. John’s Prep travels to Wirth Gym in a possible subsection match-up. On Friday, Feb. 7, Kimball travels to Pierz, which could be a pivotal CMC game for both teams.
