Larry Hedlund of Holiday Island, N.C., died Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003, at Portsmouth Naval Hospital. He was 63. A memorial service took place at Chapel on the Sound Saturday, Oct. 25. A reception followed. Larry Lane Hedlund was born to the late Lawrence and Eleanor Hedlund of Cokato. Master Chief Hedlund retired after 26 years in the U.S. Navy. Hedlund was the Command Master Chief of the U.S.S. Barney, and Officer in Charge of NAVSTA NORVA (Tidewater Area Shore Patrol). Hedlund was a past governor of Aragona Moose Lodge #1198, a charter member of Holiday Island Yacht Club, and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Fleet Reserve Association. Hedlund was preceded in death by his wife Beverly (Hendrickson) Hedlund, and son Jonathon. He is survived by his wife Helen (Young) Hedlund; sons Ronald (and Kathy) Hedlund of Richmond, Va., and Robert Hedlund of Hertford, N.C.; six grandchildren: Lana, Ryan, Daryl, Karl, Krista and Ross; brothers Gary Hedlund, Marcus (and Margaret) Hedlund, and Michael Hedlund; sister Therese Doering (and husband Gene Birkholz), all of Minnesota.
