REGULAR MEETING

Board of Education

October 20, 2025

Kimball, Minn.

Chair K. Helgeson opened the meeting at 7:00 p.m. with members E. Helgeson, Mancini, and Lindberg in attendance. Members Gallagher and Libbesmeier were absent. The Pledge of Allegiance was said by all.

Motion by Lindberg, seconded by Mancini, to approve the agenda as presented or amended. Motion carried 4-0.

Motion by E. Helgeson, seconded by Mancini, to approve the Consent Agenda. Motion carried 4-0.

Consent Agenda included:

• Approve minutes from the September 15, 2025 regular meeting.

• Approval of Bills.

• Treasurer’s and Quarterly Reports.

• Accept resignation received from Barb Waldorf, Preschool Paraprofessional, effective July 29, 2025.

• Approve hiring Natalie Wills, Preschool/Cubs Club paraprofessional, at Category III, Step 4 of the ESP Agreement, starting September 25, 2025. 

• Approve hiring Mary Lindberg, Elementary Health Office Assistant, at Category III, Step 6 of the ESP Agreement, starting October 20, 2025.

• Resolution Accepting Donations.

Mrs. Bonnifield reported on the following:

• You’re Not Alone therapy dog services is being considered for one (1) hour/week in each building. The social workers would use the therapy dogs during small group sessions with students.

• 6:10 Connect has started. This is the third year of the program and it is successful. It matches 10th grade mentors with 6th grade mentees.

• Daily attendance from the start of school to now = 95%; highest group is 7th grade girls with 97%; lowest group is 11th grade girls with 93.5%. In the past two years, we’ve consistently had a high attendance rate. So far this year one student has been reported for truancy.

• Veterans Day Program is on Nov. 11 at 9:45 a.m. and is open to the public, enter Door 10. It will feature the band, choir and speaker MAJ Nathan Foster, Brigade Assistant S3-Chief of Operations and Airfield Manager.

• The 6th grade team was awarded a $4,500 grant to reduce the cost of the Deep Portage trip for the students. Additionally, they are hosting a Tattoo the Teacher fundraiser, proceeds will also go to bringing the cost down.

Mr. Timmerman reported on the following:

• Leadership in Educational Excellence from the elementary – Mackenzie Lemke.

• Grandparents Day was on Oct. 10th – went very well again. A shout out to the student government who helped grandparents find classrooms. Very respectful and took charge of being great leaders and representing our school in appositive way.

• Annual Halloween Parade on Oct. 31st in the front of the school at 2:25 p.m.

• Veteran’s Day Program scheduled for Nov. 11th at 8:45 a.m. in the gym

• KES will have 2 maternity leaves this year and both have been filled by Jacki Condon.

• Conferences coming up on Oct. 2nd and Oct. 3rd from 3:30-7:30  p.m. The book fair will also be at the elementary from Oct. 23rd through Oct. 30th.

• The elementary has had a couple of opportunities to practice their new Emergency Action Plan. One was a drill and one was an actual medical emergency. It has worked well with the new protocols in place.

Mr. Widvey reported on the following:

• Facilities Update.

• Negotiations Update.

Motion by E. Helgeson, seconded by Mancini, to Adopt Resolution supporting Form A, MSHSL grant application. Motion carried 4-0.

Motion by Mancini, seconded by Lindberg, to approve policies listed as items 8.1 – 8.18 on the board agenda. Motion carried 4-0. 

Next meeting dates: Benton Stearns Education District Board Meeting: 11/19 at 3:30 p.m.; School Board Meeting: 11/17 at 6:00 p.m. 

Motion by Lindberg, seconded by E. Helgeson, to adjourn: 7:52 p.m.

Notice is hereby given that the Maine Prairie Town Planning Board will conduct certain public hearings as follows:

To consider the application for an Interim Use Permit submitted by Knife River Corporation – North Central to allow for gravel mining on parcel ID 20.11741.0000 listed under the ownership of Tom and Rhonda Sommers. This parcel is located at 8471 150th Street, Kimball, MN 55353.

To consider the application for an Interim Use Permit submitted by Knife River Corporation – North Central to allow for gravel mining on parcel ID 20.11741.0500 listed under the ownership of Tom and Rhonda Sommers. This parcel is located at 8471 150th St, Kimball, MN 55353.

To consider the application for an Interim Use Permit submitted by Knife River Corporation – North Central to allow for gravel mining on parcel ID 20.11744.0000 listed under the ownership of John and Tamilee Adolph. This parcel is located at 14696 State Highway 15, Kimball, MN 55353.

The public hearings will be held on December 9, 2025, beginning at 7:00 p.m., or as soon thereafter as possible, at the Maine Prairie Township Hall, 7551 Dellwood Road, Kimball, Minn.

Any comments may be made at the time of the hearing, or sent to Maine Prairie Township, 7551 Dellwood Road, Kimball, MN 55353, to be read at the meeting.
