The end of the season is nearing for the Kimball American Legion baseball team, and Coach Jose Zamora doesn’t like it because the team is on a four-game winning streak with a 5-6 record. The season started with a lot of individual players who are now working as a team. Zamora reports that it has been fun to watch the team progress and leadership emerge. Some older players who have stepped forward as leaders are Eric Voigt (middle infield), Randy Saukkola (middle infield) and Paul Hughes (pitcher/ catcher). Some younger, up-and-coming players are Jeff Hunt (middle infield), Dan Stein (outfield) and Jason Tenney (middle infield). These younger players are a key to the progression of the Legion ball program. Last year’s team ended the season with a 0-13 record. The players began this season with little confidence; once they got a taste of victory, they were off. The support from community members attending the games is a key factor in team performance. Each game brings in more spectators, and it is a wonderful feeling. We are very excited for our last three games and hope more people from the community come out to watch. The Kimball Legion will play against St. Joseph at 6:30 p.m. Friday, July 16. The boys then play a double-header against Upsala beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 17, in Kimball.
