Letter about EVW School vote

When people learn I am a teacher at Eden Valley-Watkins, they often comment about what an outstanding school district it is. Whether it’s academics, arts or athletics, EVW has built a strong reputation for success.

As a parent of two EVW graduates, I know firsthand the value of what EVW has to offer. Both were successful in college and earned their bachelor’s degrees in three years thanks to EVW’s exceptional concurrent enrollment program which allowed them to earn college credits while still in high school. I am also grateful they had the opportunity to participate in the school’s outstanding extra curricular programs.

While EVW area residents can be proud of the strong educational foundation they have helped build, there is work to be done. Our elementary buildings are in dire need of secure entries to better monitor who enters and leaves the building. Safe drop offs out of harm’s way is also important.

Moreover, the district’s three buildings are sorely in need of major repairs and upgrades to improve the learning enviroment for our students and staff. These buildings range in age from 40 to 90 years old and the aging process has taken its toll. Just like our homes, as school buildings age, the repairs get costlier, nevertheless they must be done.

No one likes to pay more in taxes but the sacrifice is minimal. The tax increase on a home valued at $150,000 is $104 a year. That’s less than $10 a month.

Voters, the district needs your support to help ensure our children are safe and secure and that EVW continues to build on its reputation as one of the top school districts in Central Minnesota. I urge you to vote yes Nov. 6.
