Great River Regional Library (GRRL) is organizing a series of public meetings to learn from the public the kinds of arts, culture and history programming the library system should provide over the next two years.
The Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment approved by Minnesota voters in 2008 is providing libraries across the state with funding for new programming about arts, culture and history. This “Legacy Funding” means GRRL will be able to provide additional programs for a variety of ages at its 32 libraries across Central Minnesota in 2010-11.
The funding must be used for new programs and the programs must be designed around arts, culture or history, said GRRL Director Kirsty Smith. “Beyond that, we have a lot of freedom to meet the needs of our communities.” Some ideas already suggested have included programs about the life of Indians, voyageurs and early settlers, knitting classes, dance classes, author talks and classic film showings.
“At this point, nothing has been decided. We really want to know what programming would excite our communities and what they would participate in,” Smith said.
Meetings will take place according to the following schedule..
Monday, August 24, 1:00 – 2:30 p.m.: St. Cloud Public Library Bremer Room
Tuesday, August 25, 2:00 – 3:30 p.m.: Albany Public Library Council Chambers
Wednesday, August 26, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.: Carnegie Library, Little Falls
Thursday, August 27, 7:30 – 9:00 p.m.: Paynesville Public Library
Meetings will have a town hall format with a short introduction to explain the Legacy Funding, information about previous programming and then public input.
