Lingering rain on weekend

·

Mark Anthony Meteorologist

Weather column: Scattered showers and thunderstorms were found across the state of Minnesota on Sunday. A few of these did produce some brief heavy downpours across parts of Greater Minnesota.

Drier weather returned on Monday as high pressure returned. Temperatures climbed into the upper 70s and lower 80s on Monday and Tuesday. The wind was also fairly light making for some great days to be out on area lakes.

A cold front will arrive on Wednesday as a cold front is expected to push across the region. Temperatures will fall back into the lower 70s for much of the area for Wednesday and Thursday. We will tap some “refreshing” cooler air from Canada both Wednesday and again on Thursday.

Expect temperatures to climb back into the 80s and possibly even into the 90s by Friday and into the weekend as showers and thunderstorm chances return Friday. A few of these storms could be on the stronger side. Dew points are also expected to climb into the 70s.

The computer models show most of the activity pushing east on Saturday, but we could see some lingering rain over the weekend. If the system stalls out, some lingering rain will be possible into the weekend as well. It is something that we will have to keep an eye on for the weekend.

Have an enjoyable midweek!

Weather history: On this day in 1961 records show that “heavy rain fell across parts of southern and central Minnesota. For example, 6.7 inches of rain was recorded in Albert Lea in 24 hours!”

Weather fact: Did you know that “raindrops fall at a speed of
7 to 18 mph?”
