Litchfield Community Theatre will present a hilarious step back in time July 26-28 with the staging of “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” at Bernie Aaker Auditorium, 114 Holcombe Ave. N., Litchfield. Show times are 7 p.m. each evening. Set in ancient Rome, the musical features the attempts of slave Pseudolus to win his freedom by helping his young master, Hero, win the hand of a courtesan, promised to the conceited Captain Miles Gloriosus. When Hero’s parents return unexpectedly, Pseudolus must enlist the help of fellow slave, the nervous Hysterium, and cast complicated plans to earn his freedom. “There’s a lot of mistaken identity, a lot of people dressed up as other people, a lot of action,” said Al Anderson, who serves as co-director with Angela Likens-Horwath, and acting lead in the show. “This particular show is the funniest show Litchfield Community Theatre has ever done. And it’s got one of the nicest sets we’ve done.” The play, written by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart with music by Stephen Sondheim, was inspired by the farces of Roman playwright Plautus (251-183 B.C.) “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” made its Broadway debut May 1962, running 964 shows. It was revived several times, with a movie being produced in 1966. “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” will also feature the 14-member orchestra includes musicians from Willmar, Hutchinson and Eden Valley, as well as Litchfield. Admission is $10 main floor reserved seating; $7 lower balcony, reserved seating; and $5 upper balcony, general admission. For ticket information or to purchase tickets, call (320) 693-2354.
