Officiating is not for everyone, but it could be for you. Check it out! You can be a part of the education away from the classroom that shapes today’s young athletes, one of the people who gets into the game as an official to teach good sportsmanship, fairness, and equity – how to play by the rules. The benefits of becoming an official include: • Staying involved in your favorite sports. • Opportunities to meet and work with high school students and others who share your interest in sports. • Learning how to make fair and firm decisions. • Staying physically fit. • And, earning extra income. To become a high school or junior high school official you must be a high school graduate or 18 years of age, have a thorough understanding of the sport you wish to officiate, have the ability to interpret the rules, and have poise and strong communication skills. The pay will range from $25 or more for junior high contests and up to $90 or more for working varsity and double-header contests. It’s a great way to earn extra income while being part of the game. Schools are always looking for officials at all levels of competition. For more information please contact the Minnesota State High School League Web site at www.mshsl.org.
