Military Update: Luke Allen Deutsch of Watkins joined the Minnesota Army National Guard recently, becoming one of more than 9,000 “citizen-soldiers” serving statewide. After job skill training at Fort Knox, Ky., during the summer of 2004 he will return to Watkins as the newest member of the 1-194th Armor Battalion and specialize in M1A1 armor tank operation. Luke is the son of Stephen and Donna Deutsch of Watkins. He is a senior at Kimball Area High School. By joining the National Guard, Deutsch has gained access to a number of state and federal education aid programs. He will also compete for one of 24 $1,000 scholarships available through the Minnesota Army Guard’s Leadership and Dedicated Service (LEADS) Scholarship program available to seniors in high school.
