Monarch program at Lake Maria

“The Amazing Journey of the Monarchs” program at Lake Maria State Park will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, at the park’s interpretive center. Bruce Giebink, an entomologist known as “the bug guy,” will present the program. In addition to explaining the life and times of Monarch butterflies, he will tell visitors how to grow a garden that attracts butterflies. There will be a Monarch release following the program. Other events scheduled at the park this fall include: o 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 25 – Presentation on frogs, toads and salamanders with a park naturalist. o 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3 – “March for Maria” fundraiser with food, children’s activities and drawings. o 10 a.m.-12 noon, Saturday, Oct. 23 – Beat back the buckthorn. Groups and individuals are invited to help control this invasive species. o 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 20 – Junior Naturalist deer hike. All programs will be held or will begin at the park’s interpretive center. There will be no charge for any of these events, but a park entrance fee will be required for those without an annual permit. For more information, call the park office at (763) 878-2325.
