More severe weather moved across the state of Minnesota Friday night into Saturday morning. There were reports of knocked down power lines across the state as thousands of homes were impacted by the outages.
The line of thunderstorms produced winds of up to 80 mph in northern Minnesota. A football field had its bleachers destroyed along with some grain bins in Argyle in Marshall County.
There were also reports of large hail in the Brainerd Lakes area. Some locations reported hail from 1 to 2 inches in diameter.
On Saturday, it turned hot across southern Minnesota where extreme heat warnings and heat advisories were issued. At times it felt more like 100+ degrees in that part of the state.
Cooler and drier weather was with us for Sunday into Monday before showers and thunderstorms returned Monday night across the region.
Our active weather pattern will stay with us for much of this week. We should see the upper 80s and lower 90s back in the forecast by this weekend. Certainly, we have a lot of summer left and more opportunities for severe weather.
Stay alert to our changing weather this week and into the weekend.
Weather history: On this date in 1972 heavy rain fell across parts of Minnesota. At Fort Ripley, “10.84 inches of rain fell in 24 hours!”
Weather facts: Did you know that “standing flood water can be electrically charged?” It can be very dangerous if there are downed power lines in the area.
