Fair Haven will celebrate its 77th annual Old Settlers’ Day Saturday, June 28. The event will bring together friends and neighbors with time to socialize and interact through the various events. Eight girls are vying for the title of Fair Haven Old Settlers Queen. The new queen, princess and miss congeniality will be crowned during the coronation at 7 p.m. in the park. To participate, candidates were required to be 15-18 years old by June 1, 2003; find their own sponsor and fill out an application. Judging will be based on a personal interview, crowd interaction and ability to speak to a crowd. The following candidates are running for the title. Candidate photos provided by Country Gallery. Crystal Boeson Crystal Boeson’s future plans are having a family and going to college to be an LPN. If she had one dream come true, she would like the state to be drug free. In her free time, she likes to talk on the phone, spend time with family and friends and she enjoys little kids. She also enjoys swimming and eating. Two words that best describe Boeson are outgoing and friendly. Boeson thinks drug use is one problem facing her peers. She would address this problem by having committees in school to help students. Boeson is sponsored by Don Maurer Construction. She is the daughter of Jason and Tammy Voight and Donald and Sheryl Boeson. Ashley Caird Ashley Caird’s hobbies are baby-sitting, cooking, hanging out with friends, working and helping other people in her extra time. She has been involved with FFA and student government. If she could have one dream come true, Caird would “like to graduate from high school, college, get [her] nursing degree, have a job in that field with a home and money.” The two words that best describe Caird are motivated and humorous. She thinks that the biggest problem facing her age group is being immature and unmotivated. She would counteract this by showing peers her positive attitude and encouraging them to try harder at the things they do. Ashley is the daughter of Mike and Trish Caird. She is sponsored by Hair-Do’s in Kimball. Danielle DelCurto Danielle DelCurto describes herself as outgoing and supportive. She thinks some problems facing her peers are using tobacco products and gossiping. She would solve these problems through summer programs that provide students with alternative activities. Her dream would be to have all of her friends and family happy and worry free. She plans on going to college and becoming an RN. She would like to have a family and travel to a different country. She would like to do something great with her life or for someone else. DelCurto’s hobbies are hanging out with friends, talking with new people and visiting with old friends. She likes swimming and rollerblading. She also enjoys basketball, track and volleyball. Danielle is the daughter of Cindy Stewart and Karl Swigood. Her sponsor is Stuve Auto Ranch. Crystal Dorman Crystal Dorman feels that the biggest problem facing her age group is drug usage. She would address this problem by setting up a class to teach people about drugs and their effects. “Maybe if people knew more about drugs, they would not try them,” Dorman said. Two words that best describe Dorman are respectable and outgoing. She enjoys swimming, biking, walking and hanging out with friends. One dream Dorman would like to see come true is having her family all together again. Crystal is the daughter of Peggi Gohman and Kevin Dorman. She plans to attend college at Scott Lewis for cosmetology. She is being sponsored by Truck Mate. Teresa Erickson Teresa Erickson plans to attend college. In fact, her dream is to graduate with a four-year medical degree. In her free time, she enjoys sports and friends. She feels the biggest problem facing her peers is drugs and alcohol. She would like to solve the problem by “hold[ing] a program informing kids what drugs and alcohol are and why they are bad/wrong.” Erickson is being sponsored by TMR. She is the daughter of Stewart and Lori Erickson. Jodine Lemke Jodine Lemke is the daughter of Brian and Nadine Lemke. She is sponsored by B & N signs. Lemke’s hobbies are playing softball, drawing, painting, hunting, fishing, and taking care of her Iguana, Edward. She also enjoys helping out others. She plans on graduating from the LPN program at St. Cloud Technical College. She hopes to find a job in this field, get married and start a family. Lemke’s dreams are to graduating college with honors and “work in a field that helps people out everyday, as an LPN.” She thinks that one problem facing her age group is the image that society portrays of young people. She thinks this causes people to grow up with a false self-image. She would counteract the problem by working with clubs that focus on intelligence and not image. She would also like to talk with producers of magazines about the images they create. Lemke can best be described as enthusiastic and friendly. Jaclyn Messer Jaclyn Messer thinks one of the biggest problems her age group has to face is stress. She would address this problem by “trying to have people accept others for who they are, and not pressuring them to be someone that they aren’t.” She plans on graduating from high school and a four year college. She would like to have a career in web design. Her one dream would be to become a well-known web-designer. Messer feels she is best described as honest and determined. Messer enjoys baby-sitting, working, driving, and shopping. She is involved in track, cross-country and jazz band. Messer is sponsored by Fair Haven Electric. She is the daughter of Rhonda Ingebritson and Marvin Messer. Chelsey Wipper Chelsey Wipper is the daughter of Jerry and Shelly Wipper. She is sponsored by the Fair Haven Lions. Wipper thinks she is best described as kind and considerate. After graduation, Wipper plans on joining the military. If she could have any dream come true, she would like to have her grandma back. “She died of cancer four years ago,” Wipper said. Wipper’s hobbies are baby-sitting and hanging out with family and friends. She is also involved in gymnastics. One problem she thinks her peers deal with is being immature. She would address the problem by reminding her peers of their responsibilities. She would ask them to be accountable for their actions. The new queen, princess and miss congeniality will represent Fair Haven throughout the next year. They will attend various town celebrations by riding in parades, attending luncheons and observing other coronation ceremonies. The trio will also invite other royalty to next year’s Old Settler’s celebration, and promote the town and event to other communities.
