Para recognition week, Jan. 20-23

·

Gov. Tim Pawlenty has declared the week of Jan. 20-23 as Para Recognition Week. But what is a para? A para, short for paraprofessional, could be many positions. Paraprofessionals work as assistants in kindergarten, the media center, Title I or special education. But those job descriptions do not fully describe the duties of a para. Their job descriptions may vary, but every para is someone who mentors, tutors, and helps students. Someone who at times acts as a surrogate parent who supports, encourages and uplifts a child in need. Their job is not always the most glamorous or receives the most attention, but without them the school would not function. Paraprofessionals are the people you see bundled up on the sidewalks and at recess making sure your child is safe on cold winter days. If you happen to be in the high school or elementary and see someone working in the hallway or media center with a student, chances are they are a para. Please take a moment and say “thank you.” They play such an important role in our educational system.
