Park offers astronomy night to see stars

·

If you’re interested in learning more about the stars, planets and constellations of the northern sky – our neighbors in the Milky Way galaxy then Lake Maria State Park is the place to be at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, July 26. This will be the first of four Astronomy in the Park programs to be held at the park with presentations also scheduled for August 8, August 16 and September 12. While the programs are essentially the same, the night sky does change. Astronomers from the U of M will conduct the program, which will begin with a slide presentation at the park’s environmental center. Weather permitting, participants will move outdoors for actual observations. “Binoculars and telescopes are recommended as well as flashlights for walking to the observation area, and it would be wise to bring insect repellent,” says Mark Crawford, park manager. The program is free, but a park vehicle permit is required. For more information, call the park office at (763) 878-2325. Lake Maria State Park is located approximately seven miles northwest of Monticello and 10 miles northeast of Annandale on Wright County Road 111.
