Paul Holthaus, 82

Paul Holthaus of Rochester and formerly of St. Augusta died Sunday, Dec. 25, 2016, at Samaritan Bethany in Rochester. He was 82.

Mass of Christian Burial celebrating his life will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 30, at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church in St. Augusta with Reverend Jose Edayadiyil officiating. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Friday, at the church. Burial with military honors will be in the parish cemetery.

Paul A. Holthaus was born April 24, 1934, in Pearl Lake to Anton and Catherine (Steichen) Holthaus. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Paul married Mabel Hinkemeyer Aug. 27, 1956, at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church in St. Augusta. Paul owned and operated Paul’s Appliance Repair as well as working as a maintenance engineer at the St. Cloud Hospital for 30 years. He retired in 2001, and moved to Rochester in 2003, to be closer to family. He was a member of St. Mary Help of Christians Parish, the St. Augusta Lions, and the St. Augusta American Legion Post #621. Paul enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, and gardening. He will be remembered as the “Best Grandpa Ever.”

Paul was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings.

He is survived by his wife Mabel; children Cheryl (and Dave) Moertel of Rochester, Debra (and Mark) Traffas of Lakeville, Brian (and Nadine) Holthaus of Oronoco, James (and Sarah) Holthaus of Galesville, Wis.; eight grandchildren Jessica Moertel (and Andrew Corbett), Sarah (and Maverick) Edberg, Ryan Moertel, Lisa (and Jacob) Lewy, Conner, Paul, Zachary, and Nathan Holthaus; and brother Roland (and Janet) Holthaus of California.

A heartfelt “thank you” to Samaritan Bethany for their exceptional care. Memorials are preferred to the Alzheimer’s Association.
