Political science professor to give presentation on Cuban Revolution

·

Gary Prevost, professor of political science at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University, will present “The Cuban Revolution in the Context of 200 years of U.S. – Cuban Relations” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16 at Alumnae Hall in the Haehn Campus Center at CSB.

In 1959, Cuban revolutionaries under the leadership of the 26th of July Movement led by Fidel Castro carried out one of the most significant social revolutions of the 20th Century, 90 miles from U.S. territory. From the early days of the revolution it has been the stated policy of the U.S. government to remove the revolutionaries from power but against considerable odds they have stayed in power and fundamentally changed the island. Prevost will explain the changes on the island and why normal relations between the two governments remain elusive. A question and answer period will follow the presentation.

Prevost has been a professor of political science at CSB and SJU since 1977. He has done extensive research into Central and Latin American politics and social movements and has received numerous fellowships and awards including a Fulbright Central American Republics research grant. His books include: Politics in Latin America-The Power Game, Neoliberalism and Neo panamericanism-The View from Latin America, The Undermining of the Sandinista Revolution, and Politics and Change in Spain. Prevost also co-edited book “Cuba: The Different American.”

The presentation, which is being sponsored by the Latino/Latin American Studies Program, is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Corey Shouse Tourino, associate professor of Hispanic studies, at 363-2728 or cshouse@csbsju.edu.
