Region 5 FFA holds their annual meeting: Becker is named region president

·

The next year promises a lot of activity for current KAHS senior, Luke Becker. At the Region 5 FFA meeting held on Monday, April 14, Becker was elected regional president. In this office, Becker will stay busy attending FFA meetings throughout the state, going to camps and conferences, leading workshops and giving presentations. “I think that it will be really interesting and a lot of fun,” said Becker. KAHS ag teacher and FFA advisor Shawn Meyer said that Becker will make a great officer. In the past, “He has taken the initiative to increase his leadership through FFA.” Before being chosen as region president, Becker served as a region vice president over the past year. He has also been active in FFA with his Supervised Ag Experience (SAE) which was a landscape management placement project at Firetrack in Kimball. Through this project, Becker learned how to keep records while managing his money and time. Becker earned a state degree for this project, which is the highest award that the state gives. To be elected region president, Becker had to fill out and submit an application, which was reviewed by a panel of three students and one advisor. The panel chose two applicants for each regional office position. At the meeting, Becker gave a short speech and was elected to the office. As region president, Becker will also serve on the state officer board. Becker was persuaded to joined FFA after his sister, Jill, brought him to a meeting. (Jill is currently the FFA state secretary). Luke can see himself following in his sister’s footsteps. “After seeing what happens this year, I will think about running for a state office and possibly a national office.” From his FFA background, Becker has met many people throughout the state. “My favorite part of FFA has been getting to know other people.” Enrolled in the U of M’s ag education program for next school year, these friends may be a resource network for Becker. Whatever Becker decides to do, in FFA or life, “He will always be from our town. If he wins more awards or runs for office, Kimball will be recognized because he is from here,” said Meyer.  Kimball named outstanding chapter During the meeting, Kimball FFA was honored with the Out-standing Chapter award. They were chosen from the 23 chapters in region 5. The award was voted on by the agriculture teachers at one of their meetings. They will now be entered into the state competition, where they will be one of the eight chapters vying for the title of outstanding state chapter. The state meeting will be held from April 27-29 in the Twin Cities.
