The population of central Minnesota is projected to grow by more than 40 percent in the next 25 years. No doubt this growth will be challenging, but it also presents a golden opportunity for central Minnesota to shine in the national spotlight. We say that we care about our local assets – namely people, communities, local businesses, lakes, rivers, forests and prairies that make our area unique. But are we ready to take the next step to manage our growth in a way that preserves and supports these treasures? Doing so will require quick, yet thoughtful, action to develop citizen-driven plans, an openness to work with neighboring communities in new ways, and a willingness to make tough decisions. Those decisions include where to put housing, which type of businesses are best for the economy, how to meet increased demand for education, health and public services, how to protect drinking water, and manage waste and stormwater. Can this be done? Absolutely. Will it happen on its own? Absolutely not. As citizens and community leaders, regardless of our political views, we can demonstrate to the nation how to manage growth in a proactive, environmentally-sensitive and balanced way. How can you help? Volunteer on a planning group, get involved in local government, or at least learn about the issues and offer constructive opinions. It is no overstatement to say that central Minnesota’s future depends on our voices and active participation. Kathy Gaalswyk, President of the Initiative Foundation
