Salem Fest features 1860s circuit rider

·

On Sunday, Aug. 12, the Historic Salem Church in rural Paynesville is hosting the annual Salem Fest beginning at noon, with an old-fashioned potluck picnic dinner. This event has a long-standing tradition with friends and former members gathering to enjoy a potluck lunch. At 2 p.m., Rev. Dave Schneider, a retired United Methodist pastor, will share his portrayal of an 1860s circuit rider, “Jacob H. Schmitt.” He will share a story of faith and hardship as a circuit rider preacher on the prairies in the 1860s. The story comes alive as Rev. Schmitt recounts the joy and sorrows a circuit rider encountered as he shared the “good news” with the early pioneers. Rev. Schmitt’s many years of storytelling and character presentations makes the program an inspiration for young and old alike. After the service, ice cream sundaes, with a choice of toppings, will be served. The event is open to the public. Bring a dish to share and your own plates and utensils; beverages will be provided. The Salem Cookbook will be available for purchase, with nearly 400 recipes gathered by former members and friends of the Salem congregation. The cookbooks include family names, along with the recipes. Salem Church is located 5 miles north of Paynesville on 220th Street (take Hwy. 23 to Stearns County Road #33; north on Hwy. #33 about 5 miles to 220th Street; left on 200th Street, which is a gravel road, for 1/2 mile; look for the church steeple).
