Sandra “Sandy” Weers, 83

·

Sandra “Sandy” Weers of Marietta, Ga., has died. She was 83.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 3, at Faith Lutheran Church with interment following at Cheatham Hill Memorial Park in Marietta, Ga.

Sandra Sonja Lila Lekander was born in 1939 in Minneapolis to Elma and James Lekander. Her father died in the early 1950s leaving her mom to raise seven kids alone until she married Edsel Davidson. Sandy grew up on the family farm in Kimball with her six sisters and one brother, sometimes sleeping multiple kids to a bed, and helping her mom do work hanging wallpaper. After graduating from Kimball High School in 1956, Sandy worked in the headquarters of Lutheran Brotherhood in Minneapolis.

In 1962, Sandy met her husband George David Weers on a blind date set up by a friend. The two were married on May 4, 1963, and lived in Minneapolis, Dallas, and Oak Ridge, Tenn., before settling in Marietta, Ga., in 1970. In Marietta, Sandy became active in Faith Lutheran Church and School where she volunteered as part of the Altar Guild, the Stephen Ministry, and school lunches (even after her kids had graduated). Sandy enjoyed many camping trips and adventures as a Girl Scout leader for both of her daughters. While she typically stayed quietly in the background, Sandy was always ready to bring cake, send a card, or give a small gift to family, friends, and church members.

Sandy is survived by her husband George; daughters Melissa Weers, and Sherri (and Greg) Frost; sisters Jane Westrup and Grace Norgren; and four grandchildren Anastazjia “Tasha” Ray, Gabriella Martin, and Balin and Athena Hunt.

Southern Cremations and Funerals at Cheatham Hill handled the arrangements.
