Scattered rain and thunderstorms possible for our weekend

·

The unofficial start of summer begins this Memorial Day weekend. Many of you may be wondering where this year has gone as we are almost into June.

We had some severe weather across Minnesota on Tuesday, and this was a reminder once again that Minnesota can have severe weather this time of the year. It has been fairly quiet so far this spring when it comes to severe weather, but just two years ago Alexandria and other parts of central and west central Minnesota were hit twice by tornadoes during the month of May. It does appear that our active weather pattern is going to continue for the near future.

More rain and isolated thunderstorms will be possible on Wednesday and again on Friday of this week. It doesn’t look like widespread severe weather or heavy rain like what we had on Tuesday will be likely, but it is something to keep an eye on at this point.

Additional rain will be possible Sunday into mainly early Monday across the area for the Memorial Day weekend.

Be safe this weekend.

Weather history: On this date in 1925, records show that “temperatures took a nosedive” across the state. For example, temps dropped from 100º F to just 32º F in only 36 hours at New Ulm as a strong cold front pushed into Minnesota.

Weather facts: Did you know that a cold front replaces a warmer airmass and brings with it not only a change in the wind, but also cooler air and oftentimes severe weather during the spring and summer.
