SCSU hosts creative writing workshop May 15-18

The 2012 Mississippi River Creative Writing Workshop in poetry and fiction this May will feature five visiting writers.

Bill Meissner, published author and director of creative writing at SCSU will host the event. Guest speakers include Marya Hornbacher, author of the New York Times’ bestsellers Wasted and Madness; and Alexis Pate, author of the novel for the feature film Amistad.

The workshop will include presentations by the authors as well as discussion and interaction between participants and professional writers in an informal setting, and writing exercises to inspire creative writing skills. Topics of presentations include finding stories in everyday life, writing and memory, description, setting, and spirit in writing, writing the novel and nonfiction, the

African-American writer, and writing from a native perspective.

The event takes place

May 15-18 from 10:30 a.m. to
