Driver improvement courses are open to the public, and registration is suggested but not required. Driver safety, confidence and comfort are enhanced by learning the latest visual scanning and steering techniques, anti-lock braking (ABS) skills, airbag information, driver distraction, road rage and new vehicle technology. Persons age 55 and older who complete the course qualify for a 10 percent discount on auto insurance premiums for three years, according to Minnesota law. First-time participants must complete two four-hour sessions. A four-hour refresher course is required every three years. Fee for the four-hour course is $18, and for the eight-hour course, $20. An eight-hour course is offered from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday Oct. 15-16, at the Minnesota Highway Safety and Research Center, 1805 SE Highway 10. Another eight-hour course will be offered from 5-9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 27-28, at Apollo High School, 1000 44th Ave. N. Four-hour refresher courses will be offered from 4-9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, at Apollo High School, and from 12-4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, at the Minnesota Highway Safety and Research Center.
